Straight from the Mayan's Mouth

In Mexico, New Agers hope Dec. 21 brings new era
A Mayan dancer performs at the Xcaret Eco Theme Park on the outskirts of Playa del Carmen, Mexico, Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012. Amid a worldwide frenzy of advertisers and new-agers preparing for a Maya apocalypse, one group is approaching Dec. 21 with calm and equanimity, the people whose ancestors supposedly made the prediction in the first place. (AP Photo - Israel Leal) By MARK STEVENSON From Associated Press December 20, 2012 3:07 PM EST MERIDA, Mexico (AP) — The crystal skulls have spoken: The world is not going to end.
American seer Star Johnsen-Moser led a whooping, dancing, drum-beating ceremony Thursday in the heart of Mayan territory to consult several of the life-sized crystal skulls, which adherents claim were passed down by the ancient Maya.
The skulls weren't the only inheritances left by the ancient civilization that have been making waves this week: The supposed end of the Maya long-count calendar on Friday has prompted a wave of doomsday speculation across the globe. "This is not the end of the world, this is the beginning of the new world," Johnsen-Moser said at a gathering of hundreds of spiritualists at a convention center in Merida. "It is most important that we hold a positive, beautiful reality for ourselves and our planet ... Fear is out of place."
The supposed 5 a.m. Friday doomsday hour had already arrived in several parts of the world with no sign of the apocalypse.
The social network Imgur posted photos of clocks turning midnight in the Asia-Pacific region with messages such as: "The world has not ended. Sincerely, New Zealand."
In Merida, the celebration of the cosmic dawn began with a fumbling of the sacred fire meant to honor the calendar's conclusion.
Gabriel Lemus, the white-haired guardian of the flame, burned his finger on the kindling and later had to scoop up a burning log that was knocked out of the ceremonial brazier onto the wooden stage.
Still, the white-clad Lemus was convinced that it was a good start, as he was joined by about 1,000 other shamans, seers, stargazers, crystal enthusiasts, yogis, sufis and swamis at the convention center about an hour and a half from the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza.
"It is a cosmic dawn," said Lemus. "We will recover the ability to communicate telepathically and levitate objects ... like our ancestors did."
Celebrants later held their arms in the air in a salute to the Thursday morning sun.
"The galactic bridge has been established," announced spiritual leader Alberto Arribalzaga, who led the ceremony. "At this moment, spirals of light are entering the center of your head ... Generating powerful vortexes that cover the planet."
Few here believe the world will end on Friday; the summit is scheduled to run through Sunday. Instead, participants say, they are here to celebrate the birth of a new age.
A Mexican Indian seer who calls himself Ac Tah, and who has traveled around Mexico erecting small pyramids he calls "neurological circuits," said he holds high hopes for Dec. 21.
"We are preparing ourselves to receive a huge magnetic field straight from the center of the galaxy," he said. Terry Kvasnik, 32, a stunt man and acrobat from Manchester, England, said his motto for the day is "Be in love, don't be in fear." While he didn't know exactly which ceremony he'll attend on Friday, he guaranteed with a smile, "I'm going to be in the happiest place I can."
If anything, the summit was a blissed-out focal point for the yoga-and-chakra set, with participants wearing T-shirts that read "Shiva Rules," or getting their auras photographed with "chi" light. In the exhibition hall people had their pick of crystal vendors and faith healers.
They could also learn the art of healing drumming with a Mexican Otomi Indian master who calls himself Dabadi Thaayroyadi and says his slender, hand-held, plate-sized drums are made with prayers embedded into them. He said the drums emit "an intelligent energy" that can heal emotional, physical and social ailments.
During the opening ceremony participants chanted mantras to the blazing Yucatan sun, which quickly burned the fair-skinned crowd.
Violeta Simarro, a secretary from Perpignan, France, took shelter under a nearby awning and noted that the new age won't necessarily be all peaches and cream.
"It will be a little difficult at first, because the world will need a complete 'nettoyage' (cleaning), because there are so many bad things," she said.
Not all seers endorse the celebration.
Mexico's self-styled "brujo mayor," or chief soothsayer, Antonio Vazquez Alba, warned followers to stay away from all gatherings on Dec. 21, saying, "We have to beware of mass psychosis" that could lead to stampedes or "mass suicides, of the kind we've seen before."
"If you get 1,000 people in one spot and somebody yells 'Fire!' watch out," Vazquez Alba said. "The best thing is to stay at home, at work, in school, and at some point do a relaxation exercise."
Others see the summit as a model for the coming age.
Participants from Asian, North American, South American and European shamanistic traditions amiably mingled with the Mexican hosts.
"This is the beginning of a change in priorities and perceptions. We are all one," said Esther Romo, a Mexico City businesswoman who works in art promotion and galleries. "No limits, no boundaries, no nationalities, just fusion."
Still, organizers of Yucatan's broader Mayan Culture Festival saw the need to answer the now-debunked idea that the Mayas, who invented an amazingly accurate calendar almost 2,000 years ago, had somehow predicted the end of the world. The Mayas measured time in 394-year periods known as baktuns. Anthropologists believe the 13th baktun ends around Dec. 21, and 13 is considered a sacred number for the Maya. But archaeologists have uncovered Mayan glyphs that refer to dates far, far in the future, long beyond Dec. 21.
Yucatan Gov. Rolando Zapata, whose state is home to Mexico's largest Maya population and has benefited from a boom in tourism, said he too felt the good vibes.
"We believe that the beginning of a new baktun means the beginning of a new era, and we're receiving it with great optimism," Zapata said.
He confirmed that thousands of tourists and spiritualists are expected for Friday's once-in 5,125-year event.
"We have information that all the flights to the city are completely full," Zapata said.
The Yucatan state government even invited a scientist to talk about the work of Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, to debunk the idea it could produce world-ending rogue particles, a concept popularized by author Steve Alten in his recent book "Phobos, Mayan Fear."

Alten suggests the rogue particles — "tiny black holes" — could unleash earthquakes that might cause a huge tsunami, but acknowledges that linking such events to Dec. 21 "is author's license."
"It's science fiction theory, I'm a science fiction writer," he told The Associated Press.
The European Organization for Nuclear Research, however, has listed a number of odd subatomic phenomena — "magnetic monopoles," ''Vacuum bubbles" and "strangelets" — that could play a role in the next apocalypse scare.
All of it amused Mexico City-based tourist Deyanira de Alvarez as she snapped a photo of the countdown clock mounted in the Merida international airport showing just over two days left to "the galactic alignment."  "My grandmother says that people have been talking about this (the world ending) ever since she was a little girl," De Alvarez said, "and look, grandma is still here."

Aziz Shaman in UK

With 21st December coming up, and all the expected changes it is supposed to bring, I wanted to share a few words about how to go through this time most elegantly.
First, don't be too fixed on the date. Massive changes are happening, and although this point is a peak, those changes will continue to integrate for a while afterwards.
Secondly, remember that you create your own reality. This is a very important point at this time. Sitting back waiting for change is kind of going against this truth. We have all worked to bring about the positive changes we want; now it is very important to follow through. If one is waiting for change, and it doesn't happen on 21st December, it can cause a great loss of faith.
To understand the full implications of this change, it is useful to consider for a moment the most modern theories of evolution. We are at what is called a bifurcation point. As a species competes most successfully for survival, it reaches a point where it destroys its own environment, and therefore destroys itself. At this point, in order to survive, it can either become more primitive, or more complex. Both these possibilities exist in the World at the moment. The powers that be are working hard to dumb us all down to keep us in slavery, which is tightening more and more, and at the same time there is a massive urge towards spiritual awakening. If we don't make this awakening, humanity will be pushed down into ignorance, control and further slavery.
The main message of the awakening, which has been asserted more and more during the new age, and which the leaders are trying hard to take from us, is that we create our own reality, and therefore are in control of our own lives. The prospect of everybody waking up to this truth is what frightens the World leaders so much. All the oppression that is going on is meant to take away our power, our faith in ourselves, and to stop us realizing this simple truth. The most important point to keep in mind then, to see us successfully through positive change, is to hold on to this truth: WE CREATE OUR OWN REALITY.
I have given a free course on Taking Back Your Power on my website. This is most important to work with at this time. All the different ways the authorities take away our power make us feel powerless, so we don't have the belief to create what we want. The simple exercises of taking back your power will help restore your belief in yourself, and allow you to start shaping your own life. If you work with these exercises very diligently now, and keep reminding yourself that you are the creator, the battle will soon be over, and positive change for the World is assured.
The last point I wish to make, is that not only are we creators, we are also co-creators. Apart from achieving our own personal goals, we also can achieve common goals by working together. The changes that are happening now are global. The human race must move forward together. Therefore apart from visualizing what we want for ourselves, it is extremely important to now visualize the World we want for everybody. It starts by knowing that you can create, both on a personal level, and on a global level.
So, the way I suggest we see this time through, is at 11.11 on 21st December, do an extra big working of taking back your power, then meditate on the fact that you create your reality. Finish by visualizing all your dreams for yourself and for the World.

Thanks in advance

Assburn

Move over apples, there’s a new sheriff in town. It seems that aspirin—the pain reliever relied on to ease a throbbing headache or aching back—taken once a day could be what actually keeps the doctor away.
Multiple studies have shown that 75 mg a day of aspirin can cut a person’s risk of colon cancer by anywhere from 17 to 28 percent. It also reduces the odds of dying after a colon cancer diagnosis by 30 to 40 percent.
Popping one baby aspirin a day has also been shown to protect memory and cognitive function in older adults, according to a study recently published in BMJ Open. The growing amount of research is finding that a regular dose of aspirin does offer some protection against the development of dementia. According to the Alzheimer's Research and Prevention Foundation, the cheap over-the-counter remedy could cut the risk of developing Alzheimer’s by a whopping 55 percent.
As Americans search for options to trim the costs of healthcare, many are looking to this affordable, ancient remedy as a wonder drug.
Aspirin May Reduce Cognitive Decline

Aspirin Through the Ages

Officially known as acetylsalicylic acid (or ASA), aspirin’s origins date back 2,000 years. References to medicine (made from salicylate-rich plants such as willow) being used to treat fevers have been found on Egyptian papyri. In 400 BC, Hippocrates, the “father of medicine,” recommended willow bark—which is rich in salicylic acid—to treat aches and pains and as an analgesic for women in labor.
Willow bark’s popularity stood the test of time. Legend says Lewis and Clark relied on it to treat fevers suffered during their famous expedition. In the 19th century pharmacists began experimenting with and prescribing chemicals related to salicylic acid, the active component of willow extract.
Modern day’s version of aspirin is the result of German chemist Felix Hoffman’s work in 1897.
Is Aspirin for Cats Safe?

Aspirin and Your Heart

In addition to being beneficial for brain and colon health, aspirin is also good for your heart.
According to the Mayo Clinic, an aspirin a day ups your heart health by interfering with your blood's clotting action. When you bleed, cells in your blood called platelets build up at the site of a cut or wound to help form a plug that stops the bleeding. This clotting can also occur in the blood vessels that supply blood to your heart, leading to a blood clot that can block the artery or prevent proper blood flow.
While it doesn’t completely prohibit clotting altogether, aspirin helps by reducing platelets' ability to clot.

Is an aspirin a day for you?

Despite its popularity, doctors don’t readily recommend aspirin to their patients or see aspirin as voluntary.
However the mounting body of research pointing to aspirin’s ability to protect against a host of diseases begs the question: Should Americans ask their doctor about incorporating an aspirin a day?
Many doctors do suggest daily aspirin therapy to patients who:
  • have had a heart attack or stroke
  • have a family history of colon cancer
  • had a stent placed in a coronary artery, have had coronary bypass surgery, or have chest pain due to coronary artery disease (angina)
  • never have had a heart attack but are at high risk of having one
  • are a man with diabetes older than 50 or a woman with diabetes older than 60

Consult Your Physician

The typical dosage of aspirin as a preventive is 75 mg, fewer than a standard baby aspirin. However, many doctors will prescribe 81 mg (the dose of a typical baby aspirin) up to 325 mg, which is a regular strength aspirin.
There are downsides to aspirin, including aspirin allergy that can trigger an asthma attack, bleeding stomach ulcers, and clotting disorders. Before starting a daily aspirin regimen, it’s best to talk to your doctor about your specific benefits and risks.

2012 all over again

SAGITTARIUS NEW MOON, December 13, 2012 at 12:42 am PST and 03:42 am EST at 22 degrees.
This New Moon, this month, and this year mark a momentous turning point, the end of a 26,000-year cycle, known by many names: the Great Awakening, the Ascencion, the Mayan End Times, the Hopi Fifth World, Christogenesis, Timewave Zero, and others. The number 12 symbolizes completion - the union of heaven and earth, sacred and secular. December 12, 2012 and December 21, 2012, the dates most often given for this evolutionary passage, do not mark the end of the world, but rather the initiation of a global shift, from living in duality and materialism to realizing our unity and divinity.
The most visible marker for such a large cycle is the apparent alignment of the winter solstice with the center of our Milky Way galaxy, symbolic of Spirit's deepest descent into matter and its return to the Light. The more we clear our shadow, the more conscious we become, and the more receptive we can be to the extraordinary cosmic upgrades offered by this alignment. As we shift our focus from making a living to making a difference, as we heal and open our hearts, we perceive and live in an entirely different world.
New Moons mark the beginning of a new cycle and, in Sagittarius, the birth of new views of ourselves and our place in the universe. The Sagittarian Archer aims at the heavens, its arrow literally pointing toward the heart of our Milky Way galaxy. Light encodes information. The Galactic Center (GC) transmits immense amounts of electromagnetic radiation; celestial bodies aligning with the GC focalize those high-energy particles, triggering shifts in consciousness and facilitating the integration of feminine and masculine, as well as a more balanced relationship between humankind and the natural world. Venus's conjunction with the North Node in Scorpio at this New Moon emphasize the evolutionary imperative for equality and collaboration, enjoining us to evolve from the love of power to the power of love.
Just a few hours after this New Moon forms, Uranus ends its yearly retrograde phase, amplifying cosmic support for a quantum leap in consciousness. The archetype of higher intelligence, innovation, and liberation, as well as the planet most associated with Aquarius, Uranus stationed ret- rograde five months ago on July 13 at 8°32' Aries; its turn- ing direct impels us to take a giant step forward. This is also
a SuperMoon, increasing electromagnetic and gravitational pulls on the Earth's tides and tectonic plates, as well as our psyches.
On December 20-22, Jupiter, the planet traditionally associated with Sagittarius, forms a yod or "Finger of God" aspect (two quincunxes and a sextile) with Saturn at 9° Scorpio and Pluto at 9° Capricorn, mandating us to transcend the bounds of our parental, religious, and soci- etal programming. Spiritual awakening requires assimilating and integrating the aspired to unfamiliar, and the newly awakening parts of ourselves, and cleaning up all aspects of our lives.
It's never been more crucial to be clear about our inten- tions and visions for the future. This New Moon, vastly empowered by the transformative forces of 12/12 and 12/21, magnifies what is in our minds and hearts. What we believe, we will see. What we desire, we will manifest. Are we choos- ing love or fear? Are we creators or victims? Are we living our life purpose or our programming? Our answers to those questions determine how we will experience this extraor- dinary time in history. "2012 will depend on who you are. Nothing will happen to you. What happens is what you choose to happen …" (Diana Stone)
Some excerpts are from The Mountain Astrologer by Stephanie Austin.
PLAN YOUR OWN NEW MOON CEREMONY. Give yourself some quiet time in meditation to see where you need to seed new ways of becoming. List these areas within your life you want to change. What areas do you want to break free from the norm and become more productive and discerning? The NEW MOON is the time to manifest the personal attributes you want to cultivate as well as the tangible things you want to bring to you. Possible phrasing: I now manifest ____ into my life. I am now _______ . Remember, think, envision and feel with as much emotion as possible, as though you already have what you want. Thoughts are things and the brain manifests exactly what you show it in the form of thoughts, visuals and emotions. The Buddha said, and I am paraphrasing, "We are the sum total of our thoughts up to today. " If we want to be different then we must change our thoughts. "If you always do what you've always done then you'll always get what you've always got." CONSCIOUS CHANGE is the key.

Tighten Up the Tiger by the Tail and lets Tighten Up!

zen habits: The Little Trick to Make Any Moment Better

Posted: 07 Dec 2012 08:13 AM PST
Post written by Leo Babauta.
I learned a little trick while practicing meditation that helped me, not only with meditation, but with just about everything I do.
I noticed I was reluctant to start the meditation, and paused to wonder why that is. What I noticed was a kind of tightness, in my chest and shoulders and neck, but also in my mind. Something about the meditation was causing me to tighten up, and that made me not want to do it each morning.
Well, there are a few choices here: 1) I could stop doing the meditation because I wasn’t enjoying it; 2) I could push myself through it even though I disliked it, or 3) I could let go of the tightness.
I chose to let go of the tightness.
It was amazing. I just noticed where the tightness was, and let it dissipate into the air. What was left was a more relaxed body, a relaxed mindset. And actually it was the relaxed mindset that ended up being most important. I could now approach the meditation with a looseness, a sense of exploration and happiness, that I couldn’t do when I was tight. And then I smiled, and things got even better.
Then I started applying that to everything I did: if I was writing and noticed tightness, I let go of the tightness and smiled — and the writing became instantly more enjoyable. Same for running, for meeting someone new, for cooking and washing and going to the store.
Every moment became instantly better.
The brilliant Lissa Rankin tells us that our mental and spiritual health are just as important as, if not more important than, our body health. She told me that at the root of it is our stress response and relaxation response to everything — work, relationships, day-to-day activities, sex and so on.
There are lots of ways to relax when we are stressed: meditation, yoga, tea, massage, exercise, talking with a friend, taking a hot bath or shower, sex. And I highly recommend all these.
But none of these actually relax you unless your mind approaches them with a relaxed attitude, and lets go of tightness. These things happen to trigger the release of tightness for most of us, but in truth, you can let go of tightness without any of these relaxing activities, no matter what you’re doing.
Here’s how to let go of tightness:
  1. Notice the tightness. Pay attention to your body and mindset as you do any activity: work, meetings, driving, walking, reading, cleaning, talking with a loved one. If you notice tightness, that’s your cue.
  2. Visualize it dissipating. Just imagine the tightness floating out of you and into the air, dissolving into little bits and then being blown away by the breeze. The simple act of this visualization can often work.
  3. Go from tight to loose. You can practice this right now. Pause for a second and clench your fists. Now relax them. It’s that easy. Do it with your jaw. Now your abs. Now your shoulders. You can let go of tightness just by softening, letting go of the tightening that you’re creating yourself. It works for the mind too.
  4. Breathe. Take in a deep, slow breath. Let your attention stay on this breath. Hold the breath in for 5 seconds, then slowly exhale and pause for another 5 seconds at the end of the exhale. Repeat a few times if you like. This can help loosen you up if you need it. If you don’t need it after Step 2 or 3, you can skip it.
  5. Smile. This transforms everything. You can now approach any activity, any moment, with an attitude of relaxed enjoyment.
Honestly, once you’re good at it, you really only need to do one of the three middle steps (2-4). But steps 1 and 5 are crucial.
Notice the tightness, let it go, and smile. This moment, and every moment after, can become instantly better.
